Ecopetrol begins refinery maintenance works
Colombia's Ecopetrol has begun maintenance and upgrade works at its Barrancabermeja refinery (pictured) as it seeks to implement new technology and strengthen fuel supply.
The initiative will generate 3,600 jobs, helping to revitalize a local economy still feeling the effects of COVID-19, Ecopetrol said in a video published on social media.
It did not provide further details of the works, nor did it say how much would be invested.
Last year, Ecopetrol announced it would invest 3.2tn pesos (US$770mn) by 2025 to modernize and expand the refinery.
It said the funds would be used for circular water management, fuel quality improvement, renewable energy, green and blue hydrogen development, carbon capture, and utilization and storage (CCUS), among other initiatives.
Located in the northern department of Santander, the Barrancabermeja complex is Colombia's largest oil refinery, processing an average of 225,000b/d of crude from 54 distillation units.
