Panama prepares for next dry season

Panama energy authorities ordered measures to be taken so hydroelectric dams finish 2014 with sufficient levels to cover power demand during next year's dry season.

The energy department called on national dispatch center CND to implement water optimization use measures at dams Bayano and Fortuna to avoid a rationing alert, according to a resolution from public services regulator Asep.

The watchdog said that the 2013-14 dry season led to a generation shortfall due, among other reasons, to low hydroelectric dam levels.

Asep and CND together with state transmission company Etesa and state generator Egesa will take the necessary regulatory, operational and technical measures to guarantee efficient and uninterrupted supply, adds the resolution.
