Panama tags 300MW thermo a priority

Panamanian authorities declared that the construction of a 300MW thermoelectric plant in Donoso district in the country's Colón province is of public interest and of an urgent nature.

Minera Panamá requested the declaration for the Cobre Panamá power generation project after failed attempts to reach agreements with land owners, according to public services regulator Asep.

Asep highlighted the need to adopt urgent measures to guarantee generation due to increasing demand.

The watchdog also authorized the company to enter the property where the project is located to continue construction.

Minera Panamá in February secured the definitive self-generator certificate for the project, which includes a 230kV, 116km transmission line to link with the national grid at the Llano Sánchez substation.
