Electronics industry mulls legal challenge to freight charges
The Brazilian electric-electronics industry is mulling going to court against government plans to establish a minimum charge for truck freight.
That was one of the demands of truck drivers to end their disruptive 10-day strike.
In a statement, industry association Abinee said that the minimum freight table concerns the sector and may further aggravate productive activity. "Therefore, Abinee is studying legal measures that might lessen the effects of this change."
An Abinee survey carried out among its affiliates on June 6 found that the electric-electronic segment saw a 20% revenue drop in May, losing 2.5bn reais (US$664mn) in sales, as a result of the truckers strike.
A majority (95%) of the companies said they felt the strike's impact on their productive activity.
According to the survey, the strike not only affected the sector's activity in May, but would also hurt June's results as 54% of companies have not yet normalized the delivery of their products to customers.
Furthermore, 31% of them were still waiting for the delivery of ordered inputs.
