Mexico last in OECD's fixed broadband index
Mexico came in last in fixed broadband penetration among the 35 OECD countries, according to data the thnik tank collected until last June.
Fixed broadband subscriptions in the OECD reached 380mn as of June, up from 363mn a year earlier. Average penetration was 29.8%, up from 28.6%.
Mexico had 12.8 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, last in the OECD, behind Turkey, Chile and Poland.
Switzerland topped the list with a penetration rate of 51 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, followed by Denmark with 42.8% and the Netherlands with 41.8%.
In Mexico, 6.4% of fixed broadband subscriptions corresponded to DSL technology, 4.4% to cable, 1.7% to fiber optic and 0.3% to fixed wireless access.
The OECD reported 123mn new mobile broadband subscriptions, representing a year-on-year increase of 11.3%, driven by growth in the use of smartphones and tablets.
Mobile broadband penetration in Mexico was 57%, placing the country in 30th place out 35 countries with average penetration rates of 95%. This represents an increase of 10.8 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants for Mexico.
The World Economic Forum has previously stated that the price of broadband services is an obstacle to the adoption of ICT in Mexico.
