Press release from the San Antonio Port Company
The Port of San Antonio and its terminals registered significant growth in cargo transfers during the first seven months of 2024, handling a total of 13,216,702 tons. This figure represents an increase of 13% compared with the same period of last year.
According to the state-owned company, containerized cargo reached a cumulative total of 10,089,738 tons transferred in January-July, which is equivalent to an increase of 22% compared with the same period of 2023.
In terms of TEUs (20-foot containers), the Port of San Antonio terminals handled a total of 1,046,897 units from January to July, 23% more year-on-year.
The months of March and July stand out, in which the port exceeded two million tons transferred per month. In addition, in July, all concessionaires recorded positive variations in relation to 2023.
Finally, as regards ships calling at Puerto San Antonio, these have increased by 6% so far this year, going from 579 in 2023 to 614 in 2024.
The general manager of Puerto San Antonio, Ramón Castañeda, stated that “these positive results confirm the good performance, as well as the commitment of all those who are part of the logistics chain. It is excellent news that in the first seven months of the year, the terminals have already surpassed one million TEU transferred, which reflects the coordination that is being achieved between all the actors in the port system. In addition, 10 million tons of containerized cargo have already been transferred, with two months above 2 million tons.”
The executive added that “these numbers not only reflect the great work and dedication of all the teams at the port complex; companies operating the terminals, port workers, public agencies and services at the port, but also consolidate the Port of San Antonio as a key driver for foreign trade that contributes decisively to Chile's economic development. We will continue to focus on improving our efficiency and capacity day by day to continue providing an excellent service to the country.”
“Puerto San Antonio maintains its firm commitment to operational excellence and the constant search for new growth opportunities. The technology investment projects that are underway this year, such as the implementation of the Port Community System, as well as the improvement and modernization works of the breakwater, with an investment of more than US$11 million, support the path to consolidation as a leading, efficient and sustainable port, contributing to the progress of Chile and the community of San Antonio,” he stressed.
