Medellín council authorizes US$269mn for Toyo tunnel

Colombia's Medellín city council has agreed to authorize the mayor to secure 520bn pesos (US$269mn) for the Autopistas para la Prosperidad highway project, according to local press reports.

The investment, to be made between 2015 and 2024, will go toward the 10km Toyo tunnel, running from the mouth of the Tonusco river to the Boquerón del Toyo with a connection to Cañasgordas. Construction is expected to take 10 years.

Apart from Medellín's investment, Antioquia department will invest 780bn pesos and the national government will contribute with 530bn for a total estimated cost of 1.8tn pesos.

Autopistas para la Prosperidad is a 40-project, 49.5tn-peso plan to increase the competitiveness of Colombia's roadways.
