Mexico starts construction of US$130mn Tamaulipas hospital

Bnamericas Published: Friday, January 13, 2023

Mexico’s social security agency for state workers, ISSSTE, has started construction of a new hospital in Tamaulipas state, while also readying another in Baja California.

A few months after financing was confirmed, ISSSTE began preliminary works for the estimated 2.4bn-peso (US$127mn) new general hospital in Tampico, local media reported. However, the construction tender for the hospital has not been uploaded on procurement site Compranet.

In November, BNamericas reported that the finance ministry had granted the necessary funds to start works for the 150-bed facility after ISSSTE argued that the existing 50-year-old Tampico general hospital was operating at overcapacity. The new facility will replace the old one.

Meanwhile, IMSS director Zoé Robledo and Baja California governor Marina del Pilar Ávila toured on Wednesday the area in Baja California’s Ensenada city where the agency is planning to build a 216-bed hospital, according to a Twitter post.

However, ISSSTE's 2023 budget does not include a project in Ensenada.
