Mexico to build 6 modal transfer centers for airport rail link

Mexico’s infrastructure, communications and transportation ministry (SICT) will construct six modal transfer centers in Mexico state as part of the 25bn-peso (US$1.22bn) Lechería rail branch that will connect Mexico City and the Felipe Ángeles international airport (AIFA).

The project will require the expropriation of over 137,000m2 of land in the municipalities of Tultitlán, Tultepec and Nextlalpan, the ministry said Wednesday in a decree published in the official gazette.

The document does not specify the required works for the centers but does mention certain infrastructure already built.

The government previously expropriated land for the 23km rail link that it looks to complete by the end of the year. In July, the ministry declared of ‘public utility’, and therefore liable to expropriation, 52,329m2 of land in Tultitlán and Tultepec.

The Lechería line will be a branch of the suburban train system between Buenavista station in Mexico City and Cuautitlán in Mexico state, northeast of the airport from Lechería station.

At the end of 2022, at least five tenders were launched by SICT for the project.
