Multi-billion BRT concession to kick off operations in northeastern Brazil

Brazil's Conorte consortium and local company Rodoviária Metropolitana will start phase one of a 15bn-real (US$6.31bn) bus rapid transit (BRT) system concession project in northeastern Pernambuco state capital Recife in January, according to the state government.

Awarded through a tender with a contract signed by Governor Eduardo Campos and the state's cities secretary Danilo Cabral on November 28, the Conorte consortium will be responsible for the city's Norte-Sul (north-south) bus corridor. The group is made up of local companies Itamaracá, Cidade Alta, and Rodotur.

Rodoviária Metropolitana will be responsible for the Leste-Oeste (east-west) bus corridor, the state government's transportation consortium Grande Recife said in a release.

Budgeted at 4.5bn reais, the two contracts under phase one entail updating, operating and maintaining a total of 115 bus lines. The concessions are set to last 15 years, with an optional five year extension.

Phase two, which will be divided into five lots, will involve operating another 276 bus lines. It is budgeted at 10.5bn reais.

Recife is slated to be one of the host cities of the 2014 World Cup. It has a population of 3.75mn residents.
