The Rio de Janeiro state government will invest  856mn reais (US$368mn) to install 423km of water pipes and construct 300km of sewage collectors in Baixada Fluminense over a period of five years, according to a release by state news agency EBC.

The funds will be provided by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the state of Rio's environmental fund Fecam. Some 456mn reais will go towards the water pipes, with the remaining 400mn is earmarked for the sewage works.

Baixada Fluminense is considered part of the greater Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area and comprises the municipalities of Duque de Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, Belford Roxo, Mesquita, Nilópolis and São João de Meriti.

In Baixada Fluminense water comes one day but is lacking the next, always leaving residents uncertain regarding supply, said Heloísa Torres, an engineer at Rio state environment secretariat SEA.

"We're going to build a system to ensure water is supplied every day to homes."
