Rio water utility plans tender under US$1bn Guandu II project

Rio de Janeiro water utility Cedae is planning to call a tender by June for work under its Guandu II waterworks project, which is aimed at increasing potable water supply in the Baixada Fluminense region of Rio de Janeiro state.
In addition to maintenance work on the current water treatment plant, the Guandu project involves building a backup water treatment plant with capacity to treat 12,000l/s, as well as installing pumping stations, various water filtering facilities, a force main, and water reservoirs, local news service ConLicitação reported.
It calls for the construction of at least 17 reservoirs, 855km of pipelines, and more than 100,000 new connections to the water supply system, according to the report.
Although the overall initiative has been estimated at some 3.4bn reais (US$962mn), no details of the tender or the expected investments for the works offered were provided in the report.
The Guandu II project falls under the federal government's Água para Todos (water for all) program.
