São Paulo utility Sabesp to sink US$5bn into operations through 2027

São Paulo state sanitation firm Sabesp has announced a plan to invest 26.2bn reais (US$4.93bn) in its operations between 2023 and 2027.
Of this total, 8.9bn reais will be invested in water supply projects, 12.44bn reais in sewerage collection and 4.84bn reais in wastewater treatment.
Sabesp is Brazil's largest water company in terms of revenues and population served. It supplies 28.4mn people with water and 25.2mn with sewerage services.
Recently, Tarcísio de Freitas, governor-elect of São Paulo state, announced details of a plan to privatize the firm.
According to Freitas, the initial idea is to offer private investors a controlling stake in the company via a share offering, with the state retaining a minority stake. Currently, the state holds a 50.3% interest in Sabesp, while the remaining shares are traded.
However, the governor-elect has not yet revealed an exact timetable for the privatization plan.
