Small-town Mexico suffers lack of mobile coverage
About a quarter of small Mexican towns have no mobile coverage, yet 96% of the country's population enjoy some
In 2017, 47,740 of the country's 192,247 population centers had no mobile coverage. All but one of those population centers had 10,000 inhabitants or less.
The lack of access to telecommunications in poorer, rural areas has been a frequent matter of complaint by the Mexican government, which announced plans to provide free internet access to thousands of underserved locations across the country. The Internet Association said recently that around 50mn Mexicans lack internet access.
Despite the lack of mobile coverage, 96% of Mexicans live in areas with mobile telecommunications access, the study showed.
A different study by regulator IFT last year painted a dark picture of the coverage divide among urban and rural dwellers, with 71% of city inhabitants using the internet versus 39% in rural settings. Only 29% of rural Mexicans use social networks versus 55% of urban residents.
The communications and transport minister said Mexico should have nationwide 5G mobile coverage by 2024, when president Andrés Manuel López Obrador's six-year term ends.
