Geocom to open biggest private contingency data center in Uruguay

Uruguayan technology company Geocom plans to roll out the largest private contingency center in that country.

Geocom launched a small, 40m² contingency center six years ago to test the waters and now the company is ready to expand with its Geocenter datacenter. The new facility required the investment of US$2mn and will house 150 racks across 1,500m².

The contingency data center is located in Montevideo's La Blanqueada neighborhood and already has 25 clients, all of which are Uruguayan companies. However, Geocom is planning on taking advantage of its presence in Chile and Colombia to offer contingency services to international clients.

"We have a potential business opportunity in providing contingency services abroad to companies we already supply software to," explained Abel Días Benítez, founding partner and general manager of Geocom, was reported as saying by local daily El Observador

Días Benítez said foreign companies entrust their data to Uruguayan datacenters because of the country's stability and lack of natural catastrophes.

Regarding ANTEL's recently inaugurated Tier III data center, Días Benítez said there was room for both datacenters to compete sucessfully.
