Uruguay announces US$557mn road proposal
Uruguay's government has announced a public-private partnership proposal to revamp its road network and improve connectivity.
Nine construction companies and an investment fund will create a US$557mn capital risk fund to finance improvements along 743km in routes 14, 20, 26 and 55. The project entails a 10-year concession for maintenance and update works.
The nine construction companies proposing the project are Colier, CSI Ingenieros, CVC, Díaz Álvarez, Hernández y González, Molinsur, Ramón C. Álvarez, Serviam and Tracoviax.
"Should we approve it, we'll call a public tender in which [the nine construction companies] will have a 5% advantage" on their bid, transport and public works minister Enrique Pintado said in a statement.
The goal is to improve east-west connectivity, the minister added.
According to data from Uruguay's industry chamber, 50% of roads are in bad or "irregular" condition. The country needs to invest nearly US$353mn a year to maintain its current road infrastructure and US$787mn a year if it wants to expand and improve it, the chamber says.
President José Mujica has increased Uruguay's roadworks budget by 13% to US$900mn compared to the previous administration, aiming to improve logistics as exports grow to record levels.
