Uruguay identifies 40 viable hydroelectric dam sites

Bnamericas

Pre-feasibility studies identified 40 viable locations for small hydroelectric dam projects in Uruguay, several of which would be used for irrigation.

"There are at least 20 projects with estimated generation costs under US$100/MWh", said national energy department (DNE) director Ramón Méndez in a statement.

The 40 projects could generate enough power for 73,500 households, although the total potential installed capacity of the projects was not disclosed. Potential dam projects were identified at 20 existing dams, 17 irrigation projects under development and three greenfield sites.

The technical and economic feasibility studies were carried out by the Engineering Department of Uruguay's Universidad de la República, with financing from DNE, the national innovation and research agency (ANII) and the IDB.
