Uruguay's LTE penetration heading for new heights
Uruguay, the undisputed Latin American leader in LTE technology, is expected to boost its penetration rate to even higher levels by the end of this year.
According to the latest projections from ITC released by consulting firm 5G Americas, 66.7% of Uruguayans will have access to LTE technology at the end of December, up from 55.8% at the end of Q1.
The South American nation is seen ending 2016 with 2.3mn LTE accesses in service, or 41% of all mobile accesses in the country by that time, ITC said.
With the rise of LTE, total mobile broadband technologies, including 3G and HSPA+, are seen reaching 48% of all mobile accesses at end-2016.
According to ITC projections, LTE is set to surpass the remaining mobile technologies sometime in 2018, a year when Uruguay is expected to reach 3.4mn LTE accesses. By 2020, the overall share of LTE mobile services is estimated to hit 76%.
The average LTE penetration rate in Latin America was 11.4% at the end of Q1, with Chile trailing Uruguay with a 20.2% penetration rate. The technology was deployed on 75 networks in 30 countries in the region, for a total 53mn subscribers with 32.5mn in Brazil.
