Water infra: Mexico provides disaster impact update
The damage to water infrastructure caused by the natural disasters that hit Mexico in September will cost around 800mn pesos (US$43.2mn) to repair.
The figure was disclosed during a Thursday press conference, which was held by the heads of national water authority Conagua, Roberto Ramírez, Mexico City water utility (Sacmex) Ramon Aguirre and Mexico state water commission (CAEM), José Manuel Camacho.
The damage was the result of the two major earthquakes that struck Mexico's southern and central regions on September 7 and 19, as well as three tropical storms that hit different areas of the country on September 1st (Lidia), 8th (Katia), and 14th (Max).
A total of 869 waterworks throughout the country were damaged by these events, affecting the potable water supply of around 7mn residents in the states of Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Mexico, Guerrero, Morelos, Oaxaca, Mexico City, Puebla, and Veracruz, Conagua said in a statement.
Authorities are estimating that half of the aforementioned investment would be provided by national disaster fund Fonden, with the remainder coming from the affected state governments, reported local daily El Universal.
According to Conagua, potable water supply services have already been restored in around 94% of the affected areas.
In the Mexico City metropolitan area, which comprises the capital city as well as municipalities in Mexico state, the September 19 quake caused 26 leaks on the Mixquic-Tláhuac pipeline leaving 700,000 residents temporarily without water access. Other infrastructure such as some wells forming part of the Ramal Texcoco pipeline also suffered significant damage.
Repairing the infrastructure required the combined efforts of Conagua, Sacmex and CAEM, which together also implemented temporary actions to address the problem, such as providing water trucks and increasing the amount of water supplied by the Cutzamala system.
Potable water services in the capital's metropolitan area have not yet been 100% restored, according to Conagua.
