Colombia's environment, development and housing ministry (MAVDT) has issued a decree to facilitate financing for water and environment projects under the ministry's departmental water plans (PDAs), directed at regional autonomous corporations and sustainable development funds.
These entities will be offered a subsidized interest rate on PDA-related work such as studies, project designs and construction of wastewater treatment plants, sanitary landfills, underwater sewerage pipelines and sewers, according to a ministry release.
"The environmental component of the PDAs is very significant, and without guaranteeing, for example, wastewater management or water supply through reforestation projects, then we will not have an efficient or adequate service," said deputy water minister Claudia Patricia Mora.
Environmental risk management should also be incorporated in the PDAs, and must be financially feasible for interested parties, Mora added.
