Project Details

The Jirau hydroelectric plant has provided power to more than 10mn households. The project was developed by Energia Sustentável do Brasil, an entity formed by GDF Suez (40%), Mitsui (20%), Eletrosul (20%) and Chesf (20%). The Jirau plant and the Santo Antônio plant, which are being built in Brazil's Rondônia state, are part of the 6,450MW Madeira hydroelectric complex. There is also an associated project: Cachuela Esperanza (990MW), which is being developed in Bolivia. The three are part of a wider initiative to harness the hydroelectric potential of the Madeira river and use it to generate power to help meet regional demand. This integration initiative will also facilitate navigation on the upper reaches of rivers Guapore and Madre de Dios, connecting Bolivia and Peru, via Manaus port, to the Atlantic.
