Aggreko secures US$2.5bn Amazon power contracts

A consortium led by British power generator Aggreko has secured contracts worth 8.8bn reais (US$2.5bn) to supply electricity from new thermoelectric plants in Brazil's north.
The plants, which total 148MW of installed capacity, will serve isolated systems – those not linked to the national grid – in Amazonas state, power regulator Aneel said in a statement on Monday.
Aggreko holds a 99% stake in the Geração Amazonas consortium alongside Brasil Bio Fuels.
The joint venture won the only two lots of an auction by bidding down the ceiling price for wholesale energy sales by an average of 22%. Geração Amazonas will be responsible for building and operating the plants.
The facilities will be fired by diesel oil, with total investment in the projects expected to reach up to 507mn reais, Aneel said.
Bidding started at 1,487 reais/MWh for one lot and 1,503 reais/MWh for the other.
The auction's sole buyer was state-run utility Eletrobras Amazonas, which purchased 525GWh/y over 15 years.
