Anglo presents technical report for changes to Quellaveco project
Anglo American has not neglected its US$5.3bn Quellaveco copper project in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic and the announcement it made months ago that it would suspend development for up to three months.
The company submitted a Supporting Technical Report (ITS by the Spanish acronym) to the environmental certification service for sustainable investments (Senace) in order to back up changes in the construction and operation of the project to include ancillary facilities.
The report includes improvements to the environmental management plan, such as the relocation of monitoring stations and the addition of a wastewater treatment plant in the mine area, among others.
The amendments to the Quellaveco project will be in the water supply, operations and port areas.
An ITS is used when amendments to an environmentally approved project are not expected to cause a significant environmental impact.
Anglo expects Quellaveco to start producing in 2022. It will have a 30-year lifespan and will produce 300,000t/y of copper in the first 10 years.
