Brazil set for 135% rise in Bolivian gas imports by 2017

Brazil's demand for Bolivian natural gas imports will rise 135% to 1.3Mm3/d by 2017, according to Rio de Janeiro-based federal energy major Petrobras (NYSE: PBR). Speaking during an event in the eastern Bolivian city of Santa Cruz, Petrobras' general executive Angélica Garcia Cobas said increased supply would help Brazil cope with rising consumption from thermoelectric power plants. "Our expectation is to keep imports at a sustainable level and contribute to the exploration efforts carried out by YPFB in Bolivia," Cobas said. According to Bolivian government data, Brazil spent US$3.6bn on Bolivian natural gas imports in 2012. The figure accounted for 95% of the country's total trade expenditure on Bolivian goods and services. Petrobras' oil and gas assets in Bolivia include the San Antonio, San Alberto and Monteagudo fields in addition to a stake in the 431km Yacuiba-Río Grande pipeline operated by Transierra.
