Brazil's Acre airports now backed by federal funding

Brazil's Acre state is assuming control of five regional airports, namely Feijó, Xapuri, Tarauacá, Porto Walter and Marechal Taumaturgo.
The transfer of power was approved through an agreement signed by civil aviation minister Moreira Franco and Acre governor Tião Viana. It entitles the five airfields to receive federal government funding, according to a federal government release.
"We want to improve all airports in the region, as air transport means life there," said Moreira Franco, highlighting the challenging conditions of land and water navigation throughout the state.
Projects at the airports of Porto Walter, Tarauacá and Marechal Taumaturgo are included in planned first phase airport development works. Viability studies have been conducted, so the next steps are developing technical studies, producing project drafts, and launching tenders for the work.
The works fall under the country's logistics program, launched in 2012, for regional airport investments which have a budget of 7.3bn reais (US$3.25bn).
