Brazil’s Aegea wins US$150mn solid waste concession in Ceará state

The largest private sector sanitation firm in Brazil, Aegea Saneamento e Participações, won a concession auction for the solid waste services of nine cities in Ceará state.

The consortium formed by Aegea (51%) and Engep Ambiental (49%) will invest 810mn reais (US$152mn) during the 30-year contract, the regional development ministry said in a press release.

It defeated the Incea Meio Ambiente consortium in the auction. "With this victory, Aegea, which already serves 4.7mn people in Ceará with sewage [services], expands its operations in the country to 181 municipalities in 13 states, serving more than 26mn people," the company said in a statement.

The concession is expected to benefit 350,000 people in the cities of Altaneira, Barbalha, Caririaçu, Crato, Farias Brito, Jardim, Missão Velha, Nova Olinda and Santana do Cariri.
