Brazil’s Bahia state posts mining revenue increase
Contrary to the national scenario, mining revenues in Brazil’s Bahia state increased – by 1bn reais to 7.8bn reais (US$1.5bn) – in the first nine months of the year.
Gold represented 25% of the state’s production, copper 21% and nickel 19%, according to state mineral research company CBPM.
Nationally, revenues totaled 75.8bn reais in the third quarter, down 30% year-on-year, according to most recent figures of Brazilian mining association Ibram. The reduction came as iron ore prices fell because of the slowdown of the Chin's economy.
Iron ore represents around two-thirds of Brazil’s mining output. About 70% of total Q3 mining exports related to iron ore, and two-thirds of this iron ore output went to China, according to Ibram.
