Copper Mark sustainability initiative to start pilot for other metals

The Copper Mark sustainability initiative is starting a pilot to extend monitoring to molybdenum, nickel and zinc value chains.

The framework involves independent third-party site assessment. In Chile, Antofagasta MineralsLos Pelambres, state miner Codelco’s El Teniente and Lundin Mining’s Candelaria, among others, have the received the certification.

In partnership with international molybdenum association IMOA, the Nickel Institute and international zinc association IZA tests to apply the Copper Mark sustainability assurance framework to these metals will run from November until July 2023, according to a press release.

Miners from all over the world, handling or manipulating products containing molybdenum, nickel or zinc mined ore, chemicals, alloys or other materials are invited to participate.

Copper Mark executive director Michèle Brülhart told BNamericas in an interview in September that the biggest ESG challenges relate to supply chains and relations between companies, business partners and suppliers. Everyone must adopt responsible practices, she said.

Greenhouse gas emissions are another issue, as companies' reduction targets are monitored.
