Bnamericas

Costa Rica's congress has approved new legislation for the prevention of climate change.

In a statement, the government said the new legislation will enable Costa Rica's energy ministry (Minae) to establish an operational framework to create policies and take action to combat climate change.

The climate change initiatives will be financed with 0.1% of Costa Rica's fuel tax.

Congress also authorized the creation of a climate change commission within Minae called Conclima, according to Costa Rican daily La Nación. Conclima will use 15% of Minae's annual budget surplus and will join representatives from various ministries like health, public works and agriculture, among others.

The legislation also includes educational projects. One initiative will train local communities to prevent climate change and deal with its environmental consequences. Public schools will also start covering climate change in their curriculum.
