Alstom, Andrade Gutierrez sign Brazil wind deal

French manufacturer Alstom signed a deal with local developer Andrade Gutierrez to build a wind equipment factory in Brazil's Bahia state.

The plant, which will produce steel towers for wind turbines, will receive an investment of 30mn euros (US$40mn), Alstom said in a statement on Friday.

Located in the city of Jacobina, the facility is due online by December and will create an estimated 600 jobs.

"It's important that local customers have suppliers close to the wind farms," Alstom Brasil president Marcos Costa said.

"[The facility] will reduce logistical costs, optimize delivery time and guarantee the safe transport of equipment. It will also make the whole process more efficient."

The plant is expected to produce 200 metallic towers a year.
