To strengthen grid reliability and quality, the energy and mines ministry launched transmission call Petnac 2014 which will auction substations and lines in five lots in November.

The infrastructure takes into account power generation capacity due online in the short term, and aims to increase coverage and cover demand from industrial projects.

On July 30, authorities received offers to supply distributors with up to 250MW. Detailed information, such as names, was not immediately available, but an official connected to the process told BNamericas that bids totaled over 1GW.

The country's effective installed capacity at end-May totaled 1,110MW thermo (1,318MW nameplate), 960MW hydro (1,003MW), 411MW bagasse (604MW), 34MW geothermal (49.2MW) and 5MW solar (5MW).

BNamericas will host its fourth LatAm Power Generation Summit in Santiago, Chile, on August 13-14. Click here to download the agenda.
