Guatemalan power distributors secure US$100mn in financing

The IFC signed a financing agreement worth US$100mn to support Guatemalan power distributors Deorsa and Deocsa, known collectively as Energuate.

The funds will be used to connect new users, and to improve and maintain the power network.

Energuate is the country’s largest power distributor, with more than 2.5mn customers out of 4.3mn and a network spanning nearly 96,000km.

Guatemala’s power regulator CNEE approved a request from Innova Energy to connect its natural gas-fired plant in La Libertad, Petén department, to the national grid at Amper’s Ocultún substation.

The maximum capacity that the plant will be able to inject at the connection point is 40MW, according to the watchdog.

In Honduras, power regulator CREE opened a consultation for a proposal to regulate isolated systems, while state power company Enee launched operations of the El Centro and Calpules substations, as well as the Bellavista–El Centro transmission line in San Pedro Sula, Cortés department.

And Panama’s public services regulator Asep approved the rate of profitability and maximum income allowed for state transmission company Etesa from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2029.

Asep also released the proposal to determine the rate of profitability that will be used to calculate the maximum income allowed for the country’s three distributors – Edemet, Edechi and Ensa – from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2030.
