Honduras opens US$240mn pier

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández cut the ribbon Friday on a pier located in Cortés port on the country's north Caribbean coast.

Building and equipping the 350m pier, which is the sixth built at the port, required investments of 5.88bn lempiras (US$244mn).

The works were funded by Operadora Portuaria Centroamericana (OPC) – the port's concessionaire – and were completed as part of the first phase of a larger project to expand and modernize the port.

The new pier will be served by two super post-Panamax cranes, which arrived in the port from China in July.

The pier has a depth of 14.5m and will help to increase the port's capacity by 50% from 1.0mn to 1.4mn TEUs.

The second phase of the port upgrade is scheduled to begin in 2022. Once those works are finished, the port will have capacity to handle vessels carrying up to 1.9mn TEUs.
