Mexico announces expansion of Manzanillo port container terminal
The expansion of the TEC I specialized container terminal in the Mexican Pacific port of Manzanillo will soon go ahead, the Manzanillo port authority announced in a statement.
The announcement was made as a result of an agreement signed between the Manzanillo Port Authority (API Manzanillo) and representatives of SSA México, the local subsidiary of US-based port operator SSA Marine INC, which holds the right to operate the terminal, which handles minerals.
Through the agreement, SSA México committed to invest up to US$50mn to build new infrastructure in the expanded area and purchase the necessary new equipment.
The project entails expanding the waterfront of the terminal by 1,300m, which would provide the facility with the capacity to simultaneously handle three vessels of up to 340m in length.
According to authorities, the expansion will help increase the terminal's productivity and efficiency, which will in turn contribute to boosting international trade at the port.
The existing terminal currently has a 1,076m-long waterfront and four berthing positions, each 14m deep and with a draft of 13.5m, except for one 14.5m deep with a draft of 13.5m.
Meanwhile, Manzanillo's second specialized container terminal (TEC II) will also have its capacity expanded. Construction works for the second phase of the terminal are scheduled to begin this year.
Last year, the TEC I handled over 1.5mn TEUs.
