Michoacán state to create logistics hub at Lázaro Cárdenas port

Mexico’s Michoacán state is planning a 400ha logistics hub at Lázaro Cárdenas port, where a 608ha area known as Isla de la Palma was recently transferred back to the control of port administrator Asipona Lázaro Cárdenas.
Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and port administration director, Jorge Luis Cruz Vallado (pictured) said at a presentation that the idea is to advance with the project so that Asipona can start offering space in the hub to logistics operators.
Some companies have already shown interest in the project, according to Cruz.
He said around 70% of the area is already urbanized and that Asipona will complete what was left unfinished by the previous port administration.
Under the previous administration, the state donated the land to the federal government so it could create a special economic zone. However, the project was never implemented and Asipona had to pay 2.5bn pesos (US$130mn) to recover it in November.
The project also involves rehabilitating the nearby Lázaro Cárdenas airport as Asipona is looking to enter the air cargo business. It is currently in talks with aviation regulator AFAC to obtain a concession for the terminal, which has an extension of 30ha.
