Minas Gerais hits 4GW solar mark

Minas Gerais has hit the mark of 4GW of photovoltaic solar capacity, the first Brazilian state to do so.

"Currently, Minas Gerais has 100% of its 853 municipalities with at least one photovoltaic solar power generation unit. This is extremely important to understand the state's position as a national reference in the sector, especially in a context of seeking to maintain environmental balance and the race to zero net emissions," the state government said in a release.

The 4GW mark was hit on December 28 through centralized generation, including large plants, and distributed generation, comprising small decentralized modules.

Minas Gerais is a solar pioneer and has in recent years promoted a tax incentives for the sector, which are also aimed at reducing dependence on hydropower.
