MOP to launch new northern highway concession tender in 2010

Bnamericas
Chile's public works ministry ( MOP) will launch in 2010 a tender for the construction of a new highway in the country's northern area, a MOP official told BNamericas. The project, whose tender is expected to be launched during 1H10, will require an estimated US$260mn investment. The awardee will be responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation of the 140km highway. The initiative will be located in region II's Loa province, whose capital is industrial city Calama, the official said. The highway will be used mainly to transport cargo related to industrial production and also to facilitate trade. The initiative is also likely to help promote the tourism industry, the official added. Expected to handle 2,000-3,000 vehicles daily, the highway will facilitate industrial logistics in an area known for its prolific mining industry. In addition to supporting the mining industry, the highway will help improve port operations by facilitating cargo transport between ports such as Antofagasta and the rest of the region. The concession will be granted for a 35-year period, the official said.
