Peru solar project nears US$460mn after tech switch

Peru's energy and mines ministry approved a modification to the approved environmental impact declaration for the 323MW Ruta del Sol photovoltaic project.

RDS Solar, a subsidiary of local power generator Orygen, recently secured a definitive concession for the plant which would be built in Moquegua region.

The change entails using air-insulated switchgear (AIS) isolation technology for the planned 500kV Tambo sectioning substation rather than gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), among other work to optimize dispatch.

The reason for selecting AIS over GIS was not disclosed.

Because of the modifications, Ruta del Sol's cost has risen to US$457mn from US$431mn, and the substation's area increased to 4.44ha from 0.78ha.

The solar park would dispatch production to the national grid via an 18km line from the yet to be built Ruta del Sol step-up substation to the Tambo substation.

Overall construction is expected to take 18 months.
