Peru's energy sector formula: Access, efficiency, security

Bnamericas

The contribution of diesel-fired power generation to Peru's energy matrix has decreased to 1% from 13% over the last 10 years.

That's according to energy minister Rosa María Ortiz (pictured), who keynoted the BNamericas 5th Latam Power Generation Summit in capital Lima.

Natural gas, meanwhile, has grown its contribution to 48%.

Natural gas, hydroelectricity and energy efficiency will play fundamental roles in the sustainable development of the country's energy sector in the coming years, Ortiz said.

Peru, which has one of the region's lowest electrification rates, will also prioritize access to energy and energy security, Ortiz added.

The government also plans to add 2,400km of new transmission lines by 2019, and to eventually convert Peru into an exporter of electricity to its Andean neighbors, Ortiz said.
