Prosecutors in Brazil's São Paulo state are demanding that the mayor of the state capital, the city of São Paulo, restrict or even suspend traffic on certain overpasses due to their poor structural conditions.

A total of 16 overpasses checked by city hall are at significant risk of collapsing and the traffic in those areas must be restricted or suspended, a spokesperson from the state prosecutors' office told BNamericas.

Prosecutors are demanding emergency works to repair those overpasses across the city, the spokesperson added.

São Paulo city hall has been conducting a series of evaluations of bridges and overpasses across the city since last year, after problems have recently become evident.

On November 15, a stretch of the overpass on Marginal Pinheiros (pictured), one of busiest streets in the city, dropped 2m. That section of road has since been closed, causing serious traffic congestion. In January, the city administration also decided to temporarily close a major overpass on the Marginal do Tietê expressway that was at risk of collapsing and since then urgent works have been carried out to fix the problem.

Several other overpasses in São Paulo are also in poor shape as most were built decades ago and have suffered from a lack of maintenance, according to experts.
