Quito to become Ecuador's first digital city

Ecuador’s ICT ministry (Mintel) has signed an agreement with the mayor of capital Quito to develop the country's first digital city program.

According to minister Andrés Michelena, the project will include digitalizing national identity cards and passports as part of a public safety drive using facial recognition technology.

Other initiatives include digital platforms that monitor available parking spots and the tracking of bus routes and estimated arrival times as well as emergency systems in tunnels on highways.

OPEN SOURCE APPLICATIONS

In other news, Mintel has published a catalogue of open source software applications that will be used to boost efficiency of government processes. The initiative falls under the 2018-2021 e-government plan, which contains information of 93 systems developed in public institutions.
