Rio plans new urban transport route with French support

Rio de Janeiro state has teamed up with French development agency AFD to draw up an urban transport plan for an 18km route between the Rio neighborhoods of Pavuna and Santa Rita.

AFD has donated 200,000 euros (US$178,000) to the state for a feasibility study to be used to choose between a light rail transit system, a bus rapid transit system, a simpler bus rapid service system or a metro, local paper O Globo reported.

The idea is to build a passenger service beside the current freight railway line, operated by local logistics firm MRS Logística, that runs along the route. The line would benefit some 400,000 residents, according to the report.

Funds for the six-month study are being transferred to consultancy company Tectran, which is responsible for evaluating the options, O Globo said.
