Chilean generators and the main executives of the associated companies met with the Minister of Economy, Nicolás Grau, to address the challenges of the energy industry in the Pro Investment agenda promoted by the government, as well as the enabling conditions of the sector necessary to the development of renewable energy projects.

After the meeting, the Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, Nicolás Grau, pointed out that "the transition towards an energy matrix based on renewables and that in this way contributes to carbon neutrality, is a central axis of the government's work, and therefore It is very important to have these types of public-private meetings in which we have been identifying the bottlenecks to advance this vision, which is shared between both sectors, and the meeting was about that, to identify how the Ministry de Economía can help and contribute to speeding up this process, in particular by favoring a more favorable regulatory permit scheme for the development of this industry”.

Among the main challenges to be addressed in a challenging global energy context and climate urgency, mention was made of the importance of optimizing the management and granting of sectoral permits, and how the development times of new renewable energy projects are affected by the delivery times for these...

In this sense, consistent with the country's objective of achieving carbon neutrality and its intermediate goals, a public-private articulation is necessary in the management of permits, at the speed and scale required by the climate urgency, but without lowering environmental standards. .

“We are experiencing an unprecedented transformation with a greater demand for electricity as a key energy source of the energy transition to replace the consumption of fossil fuels, which implies, among other things, an active public-private agenda to specify a potential portfolio of . more than 23 billion dollars in construction projects and development of 100% renewable solar, wind, storage and green hydrogen energy projects”, said Claudio Seebach, president of Generadoras de Chile.

During the meeting, the importance of coherence and predictability in the evaluation criteria was also mentioned, both at the national and regional levels, as well as the adequate coordination of the teams and services that participate in the evaluation process that allow predictable results and qualifications.

In this regard, Camilo Charme, general manager of Generadoras de Chile indicated that another important aspect that was addressed in the conference was "the need to strengthen inter-ministerial coordination in the management of permits, as well as the possibility of forming a working group with the in order to introduce legislative improvements in procedures and critical sectoral bodies, that modernize their governance to face with better capacities the current challenges of the electrical infrastructure industry in Chile”.

The meeting with the authority is part of a cycle of meetings whose objective is to generate public-private collaboration, establish trust, and maintain a permanent dialogue for the timely development of projects on the scale and speed required by the energy transition.

Context

Generation companies currently have a potential investment portfolio of 23 billion dollars in wind, solar, storage and green hydrogen projects, for the next five years, which requires an active pro-investment public-private agenda.

Currently, it has a portfolio of generation projects under construction for almost 5,400 million dollars, and 100% of the generation projects in environmental qualification in the SEIA today are renewable. The generation sector leads climate action in terms of mitigation, and in the 2020-2030 period, this sector will contribute with more than 60% of the reduction of GHG emissions committed by Chile in its NDC.
