UNFCCC registers Skeldon cogeneration project as CDM

Bnamericas
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has registered Guyana Sugar Corporation's 10MW Guyana Skeldon bagasse cogeneration project as a clean development mechanism (CDM). The project's CO2 emission reductions are estimated at 44,733t/y, according to UNFCCC's website. The US$32.2mn project is part of Guyana's US$170mn Skeldon Sugar Modernization Project (SSMP), which includes construction of a modern factory with capacity to produce about 116,000t/y of raw sugar. The cogeneration will provide power to SSMP and sell surplus electricity to the Berbice regional grid. The plant will use bagasse from the sugar factory during the cane crop season and will be equipped with diesel generators during off-crop periods when bagasse stocks have been exhausted. Operations are due to begin this year.
