Wind propels Brazil grid capacity

Brazil's installed power generation capacity rose 5% year-on-year at the end of March, driven by wind farm startups, the mining and energy ministry (MME) said on Tuesday.

Capacity hit 142.61GW on March 31, up from 135.35GW a year earlier, according to an MME statement.

Some 2.282GW came from new wind farms and 1.704GW from thermal plants. A further 8MW were delivered from solar plants.

In March Brazil brought on line 351.32MW of capacity, 165km of power lines and 2.1GVA of substation capacity.

Thermoelectric generation fell by an average of 1.6GW in March compared to the previous month as higher rainfall boosted hydropower output, MME added.
