The Dominican Republic's public works department announced an investment of almost 15bn pesos (US$424mn) in infrastructure works throughout the country, paper Hoy Digital reported. President Leonel Fernández will give priority to investments in infrastructure works to combat the current economic crisis, department head Víctor Díaz Rúa said in an interview on national television. Díaz Rúa said works will begin this week on the Corredor Turístico del Atlántico, a highway that will connect the northern coast with capital Santo Domingo through the Nordeste highway. The national paving plan is also set to continue works in the program that started last year, he said. At the same time, congress is putting the finishing touches on a bill to create a concessions law, which is fundamental to carry out the Viadom project, consisting of building 1,000km of concessioned highways to connect the three principal regions in the country, Díaz Rúa said. "Public and private investments will be close to 15bn pesos this year, and this is just for my department. There are other public institutions linked to construction that plan to invest millions in 2009," Díaz Rúa was quoted as saying, adding that the total did not include the investments previously announced for the tourist sector or the construction of the second stage of the Santo Domingo subway. Works to expand the San Cristóbal-Baní stretch on the Sánchez highway and the Cazabito-Constanza stretch will also be finished this year, the official added.
