Argentina cuts ribbon on upgraded Misiones highway

Argentina's transport minister Guillermo Dietrich has opened the first completed section of the Posadas-San Antonio highway in Misiones province, improvements that required an investment of around 1.8bn pesos (US$72mn).

This first unit entailed widening 12km of the Ruta 12 national highway 12 and widening the stretch from two to four lanes between the Garupá river and the access to Cerro Corra. Works also included building a viaduct at the access of Candelaria and pedestrian bridges, the transport ministry said in a press release.

Works are underway on another two sections of the Posadas-San Antonio highway. The first entails 13km of urban highway at Posadas, while the second involves the improvement of 13km between Cerro Corá and Santa Ana.

"With this road opened today, we have finished over 300km of highways over the last two years, while we have 1,200km under construction all over the country," said the head of highway authority Vialidad Nacional, Javier Iguacel.

The Ruta 12 highway is considered one of Argentina's most important bioceanic corridors, as it crosses Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos, Corrientes and Misiones provinces, while also leading to the borders of Paraguay and Brazil.
