Auction plan for Santos port terminal moves forward

Brazilian waterways authority Antaq said it approved the outcome of a public hearing for the planned auction of container terminal STS10 in Santos port.

The infrastructure ministry will now start to work on the tender notice.

Located in São Paulo state, the port is the country's busiest and the 25-year leasing contract for the new terminal is expected to generate investments of 2.7bn reais (US$520mn), Antaq said in a statement.

In the upcoming auction, the formation of consortiums by shipping firms from different economic groups that own cargo handling and storage facilities in Santos port will not be allowed, said Antaq.

Some port operators had warned of the risk of excessive market concentration by global shipping giants Maersk and MSC, and had called for restrictions to be imposed.

The timetable for the auction process has not yet been decided.
