Brazilian presidential candidate Silva opposes major privatizations

The presidential candidate for Brazil's center-left party Rede, Marina Silva (pictured), voiced her opposition to privatizing major state-run companies.

She specifically mentioned the privatization of oil company Petrobras and state-run banks Banco do Brasil and Caixa Econômica Federal, while also criticizing the privatization model adopted for energy company Eletrobras.

"I don't have a position against privatizations, but they cannot be done in any way. I am against the privatization of Petrobras, Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica," said Silva in an interview with local radio station Eldorado.

In addition, the candidate also criticized government plans to privatize Eletrobras.

"The government presented a privatization project without an energy generation plan for the next 10, 20 years in Brazil. If the government says it will continue to make large dams like Belo Monte, we have a problem," said Silva.

Former environment minister Marina Silva, considered less radical than her rivals in October's election, currently holds third place in the polls.
