Brazilian thermo, hydro projects capped at US$61.77/MWh

Bnamericas Published: Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Brazil's power regulator Aneel has set a ceiling price of 144 reais (US$61.77)/MWh for thermoelectric and small hydroelectric projects at next month's A-5 auction.

The ruling applies to plants whose installed capacity does not exceed 50MW, Aneel said in a statement Tuesday.

The maximum price for solar and wind power was set at 122 reais/MWh while energy sold from an expansion of the 3.15GW Santo Antônio plant will be capped at 102 reais/MWh.

Under Brazil's A-5 auction rules, utilities must begin commercial operations within five years of contracts being signed. Bids begin at the ceiling price with concessions awarded to developers offering the lowest revenue take.

Other maximum prices set for hydroelectric projects at the December 13 round were 107 reais/MWh for the 700MW São Manoel plant, 139 reais/MWh for both the Itaocara (145MW) and Ribeiro Gonçalves (113MW) facilities, and 135 reais/MWh for the 63MW Cachoeira project.

The auction will be the first time solar power competes at an A-5 round.
